Hammerson completes trial of in-app visual search

Hammerson has announced that is has successfully concluded a Beta trial of a visual search tool within its retail app. The ‘Find similar’ service allows users to take a picture (or upload one from their phone) and find similar items stocked by shopping centre brands. The search results also provide users with a map to drive footfall to the relevant retailers.

The computer vision and AI technology powering the retail technology was provided by Cortexica, who also power John Lewis’ online visual search tool.

No indication from the press release if the service ties into live stock availability in-store or how the retail product data/imagery is being provided (scraping eCommerce sites we suspect). Also to note is that the Hammerson App has (according to Essential Retail) only achieved 300,000 downloads across over 20 shopping centres, so a very small fraction of their total visitors. Something to trial via Physical Web beacons perhaps?
